ACTS OF NATURE

02-2022

Acts of Nature proposes a new court dress for legal cases involving the environment. Integrating the representation of nature into legal systems, codes, and rituals serves as a visual tool that fits tradition and helps with the complex role of speaking for non-human beings.

An increasingly common means of protecting nature is granting rights to natural entities. These enable beings to have legal standing, just like humans have. However, our legal system is tailored to humans. How can we bring nature to court?

The project plays with the similarities between court hearings and plays, where costumes underline the role's character.

In court, the lawyer represents the client. They are aware of the extent of the case and support the plaintiff in expressing themselves or speaking for them. However, in the case of an environmental law hearing, the client is not present. Backed by scientists, lawyers translate the entity's needs into codes that can be legally prosecuted.

The robes serve as tools to make the ineffable visible. The project translates the matter under negotiation into an object and reminds the court and the lawyer wearing the robe of the values and elements essential to the case discussed.

Acts of Nature presents such a robe, depicting the different dimensions of the debate on the right to a night sky. When negotiating light pollution, it is essential to consider all facets of the impact on humans and nature and be aware of the connectedness of all beings.
